The Centre for Capital Punishment Studies at the School of Law, University of Westminster is staging its annual Death Penalty Forum in central London on Friday 26 November. This event is for anyone interested in the Internship in Capital Punishment Studies or learning more about the death penalty.
The forum will focus on the use of capital punishment throughout the world with keynote speakers drawing from their considerable experience and research in this area.
Speakers include:
• Peter Hodgkinson, OBE & Director of the Centre for Capital Punishment Studies
• Nigel Eastman, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist & Professor of Law & Ethics at St George’s Hospital Medical School

• Patrick Gallahue, Human Rights Analyst, International Harm Reduction Association.
Interns from the Centre for Capital Punishment Studies’ who were based in Malawi and Uganda will be offering their insights and experiences gained from working ‘on the front line’:
• Kerry Ann Akers, CCPS Intern, Uganda
• Margaret Dudgeon, CCPS Intern, Malawi
• Barrie Sander, CCPS Intern, Uganda.
The panel will address a huge range of topics, including:
• Capital punishment: a reality check
• Medicine: its relationship with the death penalty
• Reflections of capital punishment strategies in Uganda
• Critique of capital litigation practice in Malawi
• Caribbean capital punishment: review of current legal issues
• “The Death Penalty and International Support for Drug Enforcement”.
Peter Hodgkinson, Director of the Centre for Capital Punishment Studies says, “The forum will educate individuals who are interested in the complex world of capital punishment. The demand for highly educated interns in the world of capital punishment is very high. The programme at the Centre for Capital Punishement Studies aims to create professional and ambitious individuals who can exceed these demands.”
The Centre for Capital Punishment Studies offers an interantionally recognised internship which has been running for 20 years and places on average 20 interns annually. The internship in Capital Punishment Studies provides opportunities for students and practitioners to gain knowledge and experience whilst supporting the activities of organisations involved with capital punishment issues as well as those representing death row inmates. Approximately ten overseas placements in the British Caribbean Commonwealth and Africa will be offered and they are NOT restricted to those with a law background.
Registration for the conference will begin at 12.30pm with a prompt start at 1pm and finish expected at 5pm.
